If you are an adult in Washington state who suspects you might be autistic — you are not alone and you are not imagining it. The number of adults seeking autism evaluations has increased dramatically in recent years. Many people spend decades feeling fundamentally different from everyone around them, developing elaborate coping strategies, burning out from the effort of masking, and never having a clear explanation for why the world feels so much harder to navigate than it seems to for other people. An adult autism diagnosis can change all of that.

WHY DO SO MANY ADULTS NOT KNOW THEY ARE AUTISTIC?

There are several reasons adults are commonly missed: Autism was historically diagnosed primarily in young boys with significant support needs. Women, girls, and people of color were and still are significantly underdiagnosed. Many autistic adults — particularly those with average or above average intelligence — learned to mask their differences so effectively that they appeared to be neurotypical even when they were struggling enormously. The diagnostic criteria have also evolved significantly over time meaning people who did not fit older narrower criteria may meet current criteria. If you were a child who was described as quirky, intense, sensitive, or a loner — or if you were told you were smart but not living up to your potential — an evaluation may give you answers that reframe your entire life story.

WHAT ARE COMMON SIGNS OF AUTISM IN ADULTS?

Adults seeking an autism evaluation often describe experiences like: Always feeling like they are performing or pretending to be normal in social situations. Finding small talk exhausting or confusing. Intense focused interests that others do not share or understand. Sensory sensitivities to light, sound, texture, or crowds. Difficulty with unexpected changes to plans or routines. Preferring clear direct communication and struggling with ambiguity. Feeling deeply misunderstood by others even in close relationships. Burnout from the sustained effort of navigating a neurotypical world.

HOW DO YOU GET AN AUTISM EVALUATION AS AN ADULT IN WASHINGTON STATE? Step 1 is finding the right provider. Not all psychologists are trained in adult autism assessment — it requires specialized knowledge and specific assessment tools designed for adults. Look for a licensed psychologist with explicit experience in adult autism evaluations.

Step 2 is the initial consultation. Most providers including my practice offer a free phone consultation to discuss your concerns and determine whether an evaluation is appropriate.

Step 3 is the evaluation itself. A comprehensive adult autism evaluation typically includes a detailed clinical interview covering your developmental history, childhood experiences, current challenges, and lifetime patterns. It also includes standardized assessment tools specifically validated for adult autism assessment and where possible collateral information from someone who knew you as a child.

Step 4 is the feedback meeting where your results are explained in detail and you receive a written report with your diagnosis if supported by the data.

DOES INSURANCE COVER ADULT AUTISM EVALUATIONS?

Most adult autism evaluations are conducted by private pay providers. However many clients receive significant reimbursement through their out-of-network insurance benefits. Your provider should give you a superbill — a detailed receipt — that you can submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement. Contact your insurance company before your evaluation to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A DIAGNOSIS?

An adult autism diagnosis is not the end of the story — it is often the beginning of a much more compassionate relationship with yourself. Many people describe finally understanding why certain things have always been hard, being able to ask for accommodations at work, connecting with the autistic community, and finding therapy and support that actually fits their needs.
