What to Expect From an Autism Evaluation in Seattle?

If you are searching for an autism evaluation in Seattle — for your child or for yourself as an adult — you probably have a lot of questions. What does the process actually look like? How long does it take? What happens at the end? As a licensed psychologist in Seattle who specializes in autism evaluations for children as young as 2 through adulthood, I want to walk you through exactly what to expect so the process feels less overwhelming before you even pick up the phone.

WHAT IS AN AUTISM EVALUATION?

An autism evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that looks at how a person thinks, communicates, processes the world around them, and relates to others. It is not a simple checklist or a single test. A thorough evaluation includes standardized testing, clinical interviews with parents or caregivers, behavioral observation, and a review of developmental history. The goal is not just to give a yes or no answer. The goal is to give you a complete, nuanced picture of how this person experiences the world — and what that means for their life at home, at school, and beyond.

STEP 1 — THE FREE CONSULTATION Every evaluation at my practice starts with a free 15-minute phone consultation. This is a no-pressure conversation where we talk about your concerns, I answer any questions you have about the process, and we figure out together whether an evaluation makes sense at this time.

STEP 2 — THE INTAKE INTERVIEW If we decide to move forward the next step is a thorough intake interview. For children this involves a detailed conversation with parents or caregivers about developmental history, early milestones, current challenges, school experience, and family history. For adults seeking a self-referral evaluation this interview focuses on your own experiences across your lifetime. This interview is one of the most important parts of the evaluation. Standardized tests alone do not tell the whole story — context matters enormously in autism assessment.

STEP 3 — TESTING SESSIONS Testing typically takes place across one or two appointments depending on the age of the person being evaluated and the complexity of the assessment. For children testing sessions are usually 2 to 3 hours. For adults sessions are typically 3 to 4 hours. During testing I use gold-standard assessment tools alongside measures of cognitive ability, language, adaptive functioning, and social emotional development. The specific battery is tailored to each individual — no two evaluations look exactly the same.

STEP 4 — SCORING AND REPORT WRITING After testing is complete I spend significant time scoring, interpreting, and integrating all the data. This is where the clinical picture comes together. I write a comprehensive report that explains the findings in plain language, includes a diagnosis if one is supported by the data, and provides specific actionable recommendations for home, school, and therapy.

STEP 5 — THE FEEDBACK MEETING One of the things I feel most strongly about is the feedback meeting. This is a dedicated appointment — separate from testing — where we sit down together and walk through everything. I explain what the results mean, answer every question you have, and make sure you leave feeling informed and empowered rather than overwhelmed. You will receive your written report at or shortly after this meeting. Most families tell me the feedback meeting is one of the most valuable parts of the entire process.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

From your initial consultation to your feedback meeting most evaluations at my practice are completed within 4 to 6 weeks. This is significantly faster than many practices in the Seattle area where wait times can stretch to 6 months or longer.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE EVALUATION?

An evaluation is the beginning of a journey not the end. Once you have a clear diagnosis and a set of recommendations the path forward becomes much clearer. Many families use the report to access school accommodations and IEP or 504 support, connect with the right therapists or specialists, understand their child or themselves in a completely new way, and access community resources and support groups. For adults a late autism diagnosis often brings an enormous sense of relief — finally having language for experiences that never quite made sense before.
